Why Study Kung Fu?

External and Internal Power

Martial arts can be characterized by the method in which they generate power. They are typically divided into the external martial arts and the internal martial arts. External power is generated by tensing isolated muscle groups. An external power punch is accomplished by suddenly tensing the muscles of the arms and upper torso. You can easily see the tension and effort exerted by someone as they throw such a punch. Internal power is not at all like that. It is an effortless, relaxed power generated by sinking your entire body into the ground and allowing the force to rebound through properly aligned bones and joints into the target. The power comes, not from tense muscles, but from the elastic quality of the tendons and ligaments that hold the bones and joints together. Muscle tension is kept at an absolute minimum to insure maximum speed and flexibility. The Kung Fu Academy teaches both external and internal styles.

Internal Energy Training: Bak Fu Pai

Zhan Zuang chi kung exercises challenge your mind and body as they build a special strength; the lively strength of internal kung fu.

One of the best ways to begin developing internal power is simply standing still in various postures for an extended period of time, a chi kung exercise called Zhan Zuang. Zhan Zuang teaches you how to calm your mind, breath, relax, center, root and much more.

This type of internal training is very demanding. Holding the postures correctly for more than even a few minutes requires a great deal of determination and fortitude. Standing still was always a requirement for a student in the past. While seldom seen today, the Kung Fu Academy still believes in the value of this ancient practice.

Slow moving t'ai chi-like forms invigorate you as you learn
to move in an effortless and powerful manner.

When studying internal power, you learn how to use internal energy to move your body. Slow, methodical movement is the key. It allows you time to analyze exactly how you move and where you may be using excess energy. When you move fast you can only consciously control the beginning and end of the move. However, when you move slowly you can control and regulate the entirety of that movement, not just the beginning and end. At any point of the movement you can change from movement to stillness and back to movement. You can easily advance, retreat or change into whatever form dictated by circumstances. That kind of flexibility is simply not available with hard, fast movement.

External Energy Training: Kung Fu San Soo

Freestyle San Soo workouts allow you to integrate and perfect all your skills in an intense, dynamic, realistic yet safe way.
The final goal in kung fu training is learning how to maintain your balance, root and poise when another person is applying external forces to your body. For that the Kung Fu Academy employs a method known as San Soo.

The workout in San Soo is based on fighting techniques, a series of between 3 to 8 or so moves. Once you have been shown the technique, you and a partner practice it about 25 times each.

However, the heart of San Soo is not memorizing a series of moves in a rote, step by step fashion. Rather, you seek to discover the principles and applications of the moves contained in that technique and how to incorprate them with those of previous techniques as you continue working out in a more free form style. Now your partner is free to throw you a punch, kick, grab, or any other surprise attack. You respond by spontaneously putting together whatever technique is most appropriate at that time, drawing on all the knowledge you have gained from past lessons. In this way you learn how to adapt your kung fu skills to any situation in a fluid, dynamic and realistic way.

A Brief History of Kung Fu San Soo

Program of Instruction

Each new student can choose to begin with either Kung Fu San Soo, or with Bak Fu Pai. We recommend, but do not require, that the student study one of the styles by itself for the first several months, and then, the student can begin to study the other. Each style in itself is a complete martial arts system. In addition, although they may seem quite different at first, San Soo and Bak Fu Pai complement each other well and together form a formidable fighting system.

The Instructor

The founder and owner of The Kung Fu Academy, Rich Robson, has studied various styles of martial arts for over 20 years. He is a second generation student of Jimmy Woo, Grandmaster of Kung Fu San Soo; and a first generation student of Doo Wai, Grandmaster of Bak Fu Pai. He has obtained the rank of Master and is a member of The World Martial Arts Hall of Fame.
