HEADLINE: HOWARD DEAN POST-IOWA INTERVIEW

BODY:
CHARLES GIBSON, ABC NEWS

It is all, indeed, up in the air right now. Claire, thanks very much.

CHARLES GIBSON

(Off Camera) Because there were so many surprises in Iowa. And, as we mentioned, the big surprise, John Kerry's win. We'll talk to him. He has just arrived in New Hampshire, but the big surprise on the negative side, Vermont Governor Howard Dean, expected to show much better than he did. We had a chance to talk with Governor Dean.

CHARLES GIBSON

(Off Camera) Governor, do we find out now how well Howard Dean takes a punch?

GOVERNOR HOWARD DEAN,

DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE

Oh, I think we've been finding out that for the last few weeks. You know, we, we didn't do as well as I wanted to in Iowa, but we did get the third-place ticket to New Hampshire. And here we are in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in early morning, ready to go.

CHARLES GIBSON

(Off Camera) What happened? How do you interpret what occurred in Iowa?

GOVERNOR HOWARD DEAN

Well, I think we just got out in front and everybody decided that that, that they couldn't tolerate that so we had to take quite a few punches from the combatants and the media and so forth for the last few weeks. But we stood up to it, we came in third, and we're here to fight. And I intend to win in New Hampshire if our, if all our folks will stay with us.

CHARLES GIBSON

(Off Camera) But you had stressed so greatly your anti-war message, and yet 80 percent of the Iowa Democrats who went to caucus supported candidates who had been behind President Bush's war resolution. You had stressed new people, bringing new people in, and yet more than half of the 55 percent new people in caucuses last night went with other candidates.

GOVERNOR HOWARD DEAN

Well, that's, that's true. All I can do is fight. That's all I know how to do is, is stand up for what I believe in. And what I believe in is ordinary Americans having control of their government again. We don't have that control right now. I want health insurance for all Americans. I've done that as a governor. The other folks are good people, but they haven't done it. They haven't balanced budgets. I believe in balanced budgets. And until we have folks who are not inside Washington folks running the government, I don't think ordinary Americans are going to get the shake they deserve from their government. And that's the message I've been, that's why I got into the race, because I was willing to stand up to George Bush when nobody else was. And that's what we're going to talk about all of these next eight days in New Hampshire.

CHARLES GIBSON

(Off Camera) Given the blow that you took in Iowa and given the fact that New Hampshire is a neighboring state to Vermont, do you have to, to make this candidacy work, win in New Hampshire?

GOVERNOR HOWARD DEAN

It would be great to win in New Hampshire. I don't have to win in New Hampshire. I'd really need to -I'd like very much for the people to support me in New Hampshire because I think that's the kind, I'm the kind of candidate they like. No nonsense, tell it like it is, balance the budget, deliver on the promises that you keep, stand up for what you believe is right. That's the kind of candidate I am. That's the candidate that, the kind of candidate that got me in the front of the pack. And now that I'm not in the front of the pack anymore, hopefully -hopefully -hopefully, it will get me back to the front of the pack.

CHARLES GIBSON

(Off Camera) All right, Governor, good to talk to you. Thanks.

GOVERNOR HOWARD DEAN

Thank you.

CHARLES GIBSON

(Off Camera) All right. You take care.

CHARLES GIBSON

(Off Camera) Governor Howard Dean with a critical eight days ahead of him in New Hampshire.
